DELVING DEEPER INTO IMAGES OF NOTE

Every so often a project produces images that have an iconic feel. This is not to say that they are better than any others, they just have something special about them. I was asked to delve a little deeper into some of these images, Here I share my process of capturing the image’s visual narrative.

  • FEMI KUTI

    THE LEGEND CONTINUES

    I am a genuine fan of both Femi and Fela and have been listening and collecting their music for a very long time. Femi was in London with his band and dancers, and just like his father he has a female entourage. Femi’s son (who I also photographed) was there too. I happened to be with a friend who was filming Femi as a part of a documentary, they really were two amazing days. The image was taken the morning after a concert, I did not plan it, it was impromptu. The image was shot in a hotel room against the curtains, Femi is a very playful person who likes to crack a joke and mess around. I think for that shot it worked.

  • CUBA

    THE MOST AMAZING LIGHT

    The idea of going to Cuba came about when me and my good friend Ohaji and I decided we needed to get away after a busy period. Having travelled to various places together before, we wanted to visit somewhere new and unexplored, we had some contacts in Cuba who were happy to have us stay for a small fee, we went ahead and booked our holiday for September of 2014. It was spontaneous.

  • JOHN MARLOWE

    AKA GRANDAD

    Even in the early days of my photography I was interested in going beyond the façade; bringing the nature of the person to the surface. I met John, a fisherman on his boat. He’s a bit mischievous and I was able to see that characteristic within him. Although I didn’t intend to shoot his image on the day I still bought my camera along and to my surprise he agreed to have his photo taken. The image was shot on his boat where he lives, by his wooden parrot. John was chatting away and playing around.

  • MUGEN NO WARRIOR

    THE SILK ROAD

    The Mugen No Warrior project is a series of three shoots, the first stage; Stripped Back and the second one entitled The Silk Road. Mugen No Warrior is an emerging brand, it was founded by a client who is a stylist, we came together to create this challenging story. We prioritized details from different angles to create an atmosphere, which was remunerative. The third shoot pulls everything together as one.

  • OONAGH

    THERE WHEREVER A CAUSE NEEDS

    Oonagh is a political activist. She works with Occupy London(an activist group); championing the powers-that-be. She is also a filmmaker and a very cool individual. She is very interesting, open and friendly. Her sincerity is one of the main things that come across, that and her passion for things that she believes in.

  • CAKE LIBERATION

    REDEFINIG TASTE

    I was approached by Natasha of Cake Liberation to find an image that represented the intentions, notion and vibe of the brand. It is very strongly connected to people and qualities such as; liberation, freedom and energy to create change. My duty was to encapsulate those rich qualities into an image. I didn’t want something that was too obvious; neither did I want the image to be complicated. I had in mind a balance between masculine and feminine elements. I knew almost right away I wanted a fist and an arm with tattoos of significance to communicate what was envisioned.

After meetings, planning and mood boards we finally reached the shoot date and I must say I think we NAILED IT! MOVIE LAUNCH EVENT

When I got the call from ‘Rich Blk’ Mkoloma @RICHBLKSHOOTS the curator of
this project created by @WEAREPARABLE I was instantly drawn to the idea! A live fashion shoot in the middle of a crowd! Where do I sign? After test shoots, lighting set ups and plenty of meetings the event went just the way its should.

I was asked if would allow a film crew to film me on one of my shoots, they were looking for inspirational artists to feature (Really? Me???) I nervously said yes and luckily I had a shoot booked with my amazing muse Sarine so the timing was apt. I decided that I wanted to capture the day also in my own way (Thank you Shahzad) so this is what we got…
