MORE ON THIS COLLABORATIVE STORY BELOW.

ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF...

THE PEOPLE OF…  This is an exploration of the thoughts / experiences and hopes of the people of Tottenham. We will capture peoples observations of the area using key locations as our base.

Starting with Blighty India Cafe, this story will give us all insight into the people that we are in close contact with every day but maybe never get that moment to connect.

WHY BLIGHTY INDIA CAFE TOTTENHAM?

THE BLIGHTY INDIA CAFE is the first in this series of cultural explorations. Talking to customers, staff and business owners often seen there, visual storyteller, Agenda, creates a collection of portraits to be displayed in the café.

As a regular there himself, he enjoys the creativity, friendliness and inviting energy that exists between all that use the space and thought it a story worth sharing. The portraits will remain on display in the café during August 2018. This is the start of a countrywide creation.

SURINDER

When did you first come to Blighty Café?  • Why – what first brought you to Blighty?

I first came to the Blighty Cafes because of my work in Finsbury Park, as the chairman of the local residents association, that’s how I met Chris who set up the Blighty world and strangely enough we both come from Shropshire, The Wrekin….. our schools played football against each…I am sure Chris would say they won all the time but I might have a different story as we were coached by my father who used to be player/manager of national teams in India so Blighty India feels very much like home for me…..

Which is your favourite Blighty animal?

Elephant –  just because lol….

What’s your favourite thing in Tottenham, outside of Blighty?

The vibe, the level of creativity, the people are highly creative….this place is like a home from home…I originally went to art school so love being around that energy….

Where is your favourite place in the world and why?

London, that’s why I live here….the impression I have of London is of the world poured into one place, different people, cultures, languages, food, ways of thinking all here on my doorstep…

ZARA

When did you first come to Blighty Café?

I visited Blighty when it first opened.

Why – what first brought you to Blighty?

I was drawn by the Ghandi Neon lights and it looked like such a fun and funky venue. I love the raw and stripped down interior.

Which is your favourite Blighty animal?

It has got to be Tiger! When I pop in for a coffee, he’s found perched on his usual chair next to the window watching the world go by.

What’s your favourite thing in Tottenham, outside of Blighty?

I love the diversity. I’ve lived here for 12 years and it’s evolving in to a community which has a wide range of activities for everyone. So far I’ve gone to art classes, aerial hoop and yoga. All these activities are becoming available for us, and is really strengthening our area as a community.

Where is your favourite place in the world and why?

My favourite place in the world is my parents house in London and in Philippines. Although I’ve visited some gorgeous and breath taking places around this Earth, I feel my most comfortable, safest and happiest when I’m around my family and in an environment where I’m most at peace.

I have a facebook page under the name; @zaraguevarayoga and my instagram is @zaraguevara

ED: I turned my kitchen hobby into a career when an opportunity to roast coffee at Blighty came up a number of years ago. I quickly realised that I find it deeply satisfying about making a good coffee for someone else to enjoy and that a simple ‘hello, how are you?’ to a stranger can open up a very personal conversation over the bar. The café allows me to do things that I love, look after, meet and connect people and I love that the café has the power to bring people together in a way that I feel is missed in our fast paced, screen based lives now.
