SOPHIES UNIQUE IDEAS INSPIRED MY AVAILABLE LIGHT APPROACH TO THIS GREAT COLLECTION.

SOPHIE THICKETT

When I met Sophie I know that there was a talent brimming with ideas and it was only a matter of time until we joined forces to create something special. Sophie as I said before “You blew my mind!”

The analysis of Body Dysmorphic Disorder led me to explore the distortion and manipulation of silhouette combined with Knitwear. To portray one’s emotions I extracted different feelings and turned them into the way they might feel in a piece of clothing. The collection illustrates a mass of disproportion with fragments of normality for the balance between a good and bad day in the life of a BDD sufferer.

The exaggerated silhouette and restricting features combines the natural and unnatural male muscle form reflecting traits of Muscle Dysmorphia in men. Informing the knitwear was the texture and pattern of the skin, amplifying spots, goosebumps and pores to create circles that the plastic can mould into easily. Plastic was used to imitate the similarity and strength of one’s skin in a literal and metaphorical sense.

The concept of this collection is about raising awareness for the mental health of men and women, showing the viewer how people suffering from a mental illness might feel in a visual and powerful form.
